Fresh revelations have emerged regarding the strategic moves by northern political elites and southern opposition leaders to unite under a new political party ahead of the 2027 presidential election, all in a bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The new political platform, tentatively named the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), is being positioned as a mega opposition party to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, insiders reveal that the journey to forming the new alliance has been marred by internal divisions, failed party adoptions, and unresolved power tussles.
Atiku, LND, Amaechi Behind Coalition’s New Party Strategy
Sources close to the development confirmed to NaijaBlogDaily that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the League of Northern Democrats (LND), and several southern political leaders agreed on the formation of a new party rather than adopt an existing platform.
The LND, led by Dr. Umar Ardo and former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, originally planned to register the League of All Democrats. However, the coalition, during a high-level meeting on May 6, 2025, opted to modify and rename the party to All Democratic Alliance (ADA) to reflect the collective vision of all stakeholders.
A key committee, called the New Platform Committee (NPC), was established under the leadership of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Dr. Ardo. Their mandate: to harmonize interest groups and prevent internal conflicts by proposing a new and neutral platform for opposition unity.
Why the Coalition Rejected Existing Parties
Top coalition sources said the idea of using existing parties like the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was shelved over fears of internal litigation and resistance from party executives.
- “Adopting an existing party could spark legal battles from original members. There’s also fear of being hijacked or sabotaged internally. The coalition wants a clean start,” a senior source revealed.
The Atiku-led National Opposition Coalition Group initially pushed for the ADC, even after the party amended its constitution to grant equal privileges to defectors. However, some state officials within the ADC refused to cede control, threatening to oppose the move.
The SDP was also considered, but sources said its perceived alignment with President Tinubu made it an unfavorable option. The SDP National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, publicly rejected any merger talks, claiming the party would not allow “takeover ambitions” from external blocs.
All Democratic Alliance (ADA): The New Face of Opposition?
- Following a decisive meeting held on June 19, 2025, the coalition agreed to proceed with the registration of a new political party—the All Democratic Alliance. It will incorporate manifestos, logos, and a constitution initially developed by the LND, but modified to include interests from all regional groups.
- A former minister involved in the process told NaijaBlogDaily, “The name and structure are a collective effort. It’s not a hijack. All parties involved agreed that ADA best reflects a united front for 2027.”
- Although key figures such as Amaechi, Shekarau, and Atiku are behind the scenes steering the coalition, official spokespeople have remained silent, refusing to make public declarations until INEC completes the registration process.
APC Responds: “They Must Stop Accusing Tinubu of One-Party Agenda”
Reacting to the formation of the anti-Tinubu coalition and its planned mega party, APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, welcomed the move, stating it is within the democratic rights of the opposition.
He said, “This proves that the APC is not creating a one-party system. I hope the opposition stops gaslighting the public with unfounded claims. Let democracy thrive.”

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the ADC, Ralph Nwosu, maintained that his party remains part of the coalition’s strategy and is not threatened by the emergence of ADA. “ADC brings experience to the table. We’re open to collaboration, not competition,” he said.
Will a Mega Opposition Party Unseat Tinubu in 2027?
Despite the optimism surrounding the All Democratic Alliance, observers note that internal power struggles, ideological differences, and regional interests may still threaten the coalition’s success.
A northern coalition insider said, “This new party is a product of compromise, but it remains to be seen whether these leaders can set aside personal ambitions and truly unite. The challenge isn’t forming a party — it’s staying united till 2027.”
