Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has confirmed that he will once again contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 under the LP platform.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Obi addressed a group of his supporters, stating clearly:
“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
Obi Speaks on Political Party Crisis
Responding to concerns over the ongoing internal crisis within the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Obi blamed the instability on interference from the Nigerian government.
“What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government—quote me anywhere,” Obi declared.

He narrated a past experience during the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, revealing that political interference was handled decisively back then.
“Yar’Adua called the INEC chairman then, Prof. Maurice Iwu, and ensured peace in political parties. Today, the system is deliberately creating problems in all parties,” he said.
Obi noted that part of his mission, if elected, would be to reform the political system and strengthen party democracy.
“There can’t be a functional democracy without a strong opposition,” he added.
Obi Calls for Youth Participation and Political Reforms
The 2023 Labour Party flagbearer urged Nigerian youths and voters not to lose hope, despite the resistance from those benefiting from the current system. He emphasized the importance of voter responsibility in ensuring election transparency and credible outcomes.
“Even if political parties pay agents, it is Nigerians themselves who must ensure their votes count,” he noted.
He also stressed the need for political reforms, including introducing a retirement age for politicians contesting public offices.

“By 2027, I’ll be 65 years old. I don’t want to be contesting elections in my 70s,” he said, hinting that 2027 could be his final attempt.
Conclusion
Peter Obi’s declaration has already sparked excitement among his loyal base, especially among young Nigerians who supported his 2023 campaign for “a new Nigeria.” His commitment to running on the Labour Party ticket reaffirms his stance on party loyalty and long-term political reforms.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, all eyes will be on the Obidient Movement and how they reshape the political narrative in Nigeria once again.
