2027 Elections: PDP Governors Dismiss Merger Talks, Demand National Security Overhaul.

In a strong declaration ahead of the 2027 general elections, governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have firmly rejected speculations of any merger or coalition with other political parties.

Following their 4th 2025 meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by its Chairman and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, stated unequivocally that the PDP will not enter into any merger or alliance. Instead, the party remains open to welcoming individuals, groups, and other parties ready to join forces under the PDP to rescue Nigeria and provide credible leadership in 2027.

PDP Rules Out Political Merger Ahead of 2027

Reacting to nationwide rumors of a possible opposition coalition, the governors reiterated that the PDP, being Nigeria’s largest opposition party, has no plans to merge. However, they remain open to strengthening their ranks through legitimate defections and internal consolidation.

PDP Governors Tackle Worsening Insecurity in Nigeria

The Forum expressed grave concern over the deteriorating security situation across Nigeria, particularly in Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau States. They called on the Federal Government to implement an urgent overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, empowering state governments to protect lives and property more effectively.

Rivers State Crisis: PDP Backs Governor Fubara

The PDP Governors also condemned the political tension and state of emergency threats in Rivers State. They pledged full support to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and criticized attempts to undermine democracy through unconstitutional actions.

PDP Eyes August 2025 for National Convention

In preparation for the 2027 general elections, the Forum announced plans for a major National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27, 2025, and an early National Convention to be held on August 28–30, 2025, in Kano.

They also announced key appointments:

  • Zoning Committee: Governor Douye Diri (Chairman), Governor Dauda Lawal (Vice Chairman), Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Secretary)
  • Convention Committee: Governor Ahmadu Fintiri (Chairman), Governor Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman), Governor Peter Mbah (Secretary)

Unity and Readiness for 2027

The PDP Governors emphasized unity within the party and their commitment to constitutional democracy. They thanked Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Ibadan for hosting the strategic meeting.

Present at the meeting were top PDP figures, including Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, and governors or representatives from Oyo, Bauchi, Adamawa, Osun, Enugu, Taraba, Zamfara, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, and Delta States.
