Ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, a new political movement, the Nasiru El-Rufai Solidarity Group, popularly known as Nasiriya, has been inaugurated under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Sokoto State.
The group, led by National Coordinator Ibrahim Babuga, is aimed at mobilising support for the anticipated presidential ambition of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Sokoto State chapter, Babuga described Nasiriya as a fast-growing political and social movement grounded in reformist ideals, focused on good governance, inclusivity, and youth empowerment.

“The Nasiriya group operates under the SDP and is gaining strong momentum across Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna, Kano, Maiduguri, Niger, Katsina, and Sokoto,” Babuga stated.
He added that the movement is designed to provide a viable political alternative for Nigerians seeking change from the traditional political establishment. He emphasized core values such as transparency, accountability, and equitable development, reflecting El-Rufai’s leadership style.
Babuga also advocated for increased female political participation in the upcoming elections, affirming the group’s support for women interested in seeking political office.
In his remarks, Sani Romo, SDP Chairman in Sokoto, praised the party’s historical presence since 1992 and described El-Rufai’s involvement as a significant boost to the party’s national appeal.
“El-Rufai’s alignment with the SDP is a turning point. It positions us to become a leading political force in Nigeria,” Romo declared.
Sunusi Gidadawa, the Grand Patron of the group, emphasized the group’s mission to promote visionary leadership that can address security challenges, revamp agriculture, and foster peaceful coexistence in Northern Nigeria.

Also speaking, Sunusi Lamido, the Sokoto State Coordinator of Nasiriya, pledged unwavering mobilization efforts to strengthen grassroots support.
He cited El-Rufai’s leadership qualities as a strong motivator for the group’s commitment and urged members to remain focused on achieving national transformation.
