The President of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation and former leader of the Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), Dr. Jibril Mustapha, has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released on Sunday in Lagos, Dr. Mustapha appealed to Jonathan to heed the growing calls urging him to run for office once again, citing the nation’s pressing challenges such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and rampant banditry.

“As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, it is vital that stakeholders rally behind a candidate who can unite the nation and lead us toward a brighter future. We believe former President Jonathan is that candidate,” Mustapha stated.

He emphasized the urgent need for a leader who exemplifies integrity, inclusivity, and a strong commitment to national unity.

Mustapha highlighted that during his previous tenure, Jonathan demonstrated democratic values and a focus on citizen welfare, qualities that are desperately needed in today’s political climate.

“Jonathan’s leadership style promoted inclusivity and economic growth. His vision and experience are crucial for steering Nigeria back to stability and prosperity,” Mustapha added.

The Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), which Mustapha once led, was a major youth support group for former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, Mustapha now believes that Nigeria’s current circumstances demand a return to Jonathan’s brand of leadership.

Amid ongoing debates over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, a Federal High Court in Bayelsa State ruled in 2022 that Jonathan is legally eligible to run. Justice Dashen, who presided over the case, clarified that Jonathan’s first assumption of office was not through an election but succession after the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, thus not disqualifying him under Section 137 of the constitution.

As the 2027 elections approach, Jonathan’s potential candidacy is set to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, with many political observers watching closely.
