Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as a failure that does not deserve re-election in 2027.
In a statement on Friday, Atiku noted that despite recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), he bears no resentment, emphasizing that freedom of association is fundamental to democracy.
Atiku’s remarks come after prominent PDP figures, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and House of Representatives member Oluwole Oke, defected to the ruling APC.
Reacting, Atiku said:
“Freedom of association and expression are fundamental rights in any democracy. Defections, alliances, and realignments are part and parcel of democratic politics.”
He also addressed criticisms over his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, calling it an act of selective outrage:
“When PDP leaders meet with Tinubu, it’s called strategy, but when I visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency.”
Atiku warned Nigerians that the real challenge ahead is the Tinubu administration’s “abysmal failure” and urged voters to reject division based on ethnic, regional, or religious sentiments.
“The Tinubu administration has no credible achievements to boast of. Chaos and division are its only strategies.”
Kwankwaso Weighs Political Options
Meanwhile, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), are considering political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to party insiders, Kwankwaso and the NNPP are exploring three options:
- Continue independently with the NNPP.
- Form a coalition with Atiku Abubakar’s emerging political movement.
- Join the ruling APC.
Speaking exclusively to journalists, NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, confirmed that consultations are ongoing:

“Proper politicking will begin after May 29th, which marks the midterm of this administration. We are talking with different groups, but no final decision has been made.”
He added that although speculations of Kwankwaso joining the APC have been widespread, no official move has occurred yet:
“Very soon, we will announce our direction. All three options are still on the table.”
