2027 Elections: ADC Eyes Five Governors as Sanwo Olu and Wike Criticize Opposition Coalition.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), now the chosen platform for Nigeria’s leading opposition coalition, is reportedly targeting no fewer than five sitting governors ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Opposition Coalition Gains Momentum

According to exclusive findings by Naija Blog Daily, five governors—mainly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—are in talks to defect to the ADC, fueled by growing dissatisfaction within the PDP. This development follows the recent resignation of five prominent PDP leaders across five states who have already joined the ADC.

Top opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and ex-Senate President David Mark, formally adopted the ADC as their new political platform last Wednesday. At the unveiling event, Mark was announced as Interim National Chairman, while former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, was named Secretary.

The coalition also welcomed several notable APC defectors, including ex-APC National Chairman John Oyegun, former Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

In addition, heavyweight PDP leaders such as Uche Secondus, Aminu Tambuwal, Sule Lamido, Liyel Imoke, Gabriel Suswam, Emeka Ihedioha, Babangida Aliyu, and Sam Egwu have aligned with the ADC-led coalition.

No Sitting Governors Yet – APC Mocks Coalition

Criticism has trailed the emergence of the ADC as the new opposition front. APC chieftain and South East National Vice Chairman, Ijeomah Arodiogbu, downplayed the strength of the coalition, noting the absence of serving governors.

  • According to Arodiogbu, “Unlike the APC merger, which attracted six sitting governors, this coalition has none. Instead, the governors are staying with the APC because they see no substance in the opposition coalition.”

He described the ADC coalition as a group driven by desperation for power and lacking a clear agenda for Nigerians.

Insiders Reveal ADC is in Talks With Five Governors

Despite these criticisms, ADC insiders remain confident. A former senator from Katsina State confirmed that five PDP governors are in advanced talks to defect to the ADC, but are waiting for the internal crisis in the PDP—particularly involving Nyesom Wike—to play out.

Another insider close to a former governor involved in the coalition revealed that talks are ongoing with seven governors, both from the South and North. However, the names and parties of the governors were not disclosed for strategic reasons.

Fresh Wave of PDP Defections Across the North

Since the official adoption of the ADC on July 2, more PDP chieftains from the North have dumped the party.

From Benue State, former Attorney General Alex Adum and ex-Commissioner Olofu Samuel resigned. In Kano, leaders like Ibrahim Amin and Mukhtar Adam cited unresolved internal crises. From Niger State, Mohammed Mukhtar also quit, saying his decision followed deep personal reflection. Gombe State’s former governorship candidate, AVM Shehu Adamu (retd), also exited the PDP.

PDP Denies Defection Rumors

Reacting to the claims, PDP National Spokesman Debo Ologunagba dismissed the report of governors planning to join the ADC as a mere hallucination. “Our governors are united, and the PDP is focused on its upcoming national convention,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu and Wike Knock Coalition

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while speaking to political stakeholders on Friday, condemned the ADC coalition as a distraction aimed at destabilizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

  • “Their ambition will fail. The coalition is a mere ploy to derail the progress being made under President Tinubu,” he stated.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has also reportedly rejected the coalition, criticizing its leaders for failing to unify the opposition properly.

Conclusion

As the 2027 general elections approach, the political landscape continues to shift dramatically. With the ADC now emerging as a central force for opposition unity and the PDP facing internal defections, all eyes are on the coming months to see whether the ADC can convert promises into real political power.
