Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that the 2027 presidential election will no longer be a typical party contest but a battle between Nigerians and the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
Atiku made this statement on Friday while reacting to the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa.
According to Atiku, freedom of association and expression are non-negotiable in a democratic system. He emphasized that while political realignments are normal, the core of the 2027 election lies in the suffering of Nigerians under Tinubu’s leadership.
“This is not about APC vs PDP or LP vs APC,” he said. “It is Nigerians versus an administration that has plunged the nation into untold suffering.”
Atiku Blames Tinubu’s Government for Nigeria’s Economic Crisis
Atiku criticized the Tinubu-led administration for what he described as economic collapse, rising inflation, and increasing youth unemployment.
“The economy is in freefall. Inflation is choking the masses. Jobs are vanishing. Youth restiveness is rising to terrifying levels. Nigerians are not just tired — they are angry, and rightfully so.”
He stressed that the 2027 election is about collective survival, warning Nigerians not to be distracted by divisive tactics.
“We must reject every attempt to divide us along ethnic, regional, or religious lines. These are tools of manipulation used by those with nothing to offer.”
On Visiting Buhari: Why the Uproar?
Atiku also responded to criticisms over his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it was in line with the tradition of political consultations, just as was done during the 2013 opposition merger.

“Let’s not rewrite history,” he said. “Buhari is a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. Political engagement should not be demonized.”
Atiku concluded by urging Nigerians to unite in confronting misgovernance, stating that the real enemy is not one another but the failed policies of the current administration.
