Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly considering aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the party intensifies consultations with major political stakeholders across Nigeria.
Multiple sources within the ADC National Working Committee (NWC), who spoke anonymously, confirmed that the former president is exploring the possibility of using the ADC platform amid growing calls for his political comeback.
Recent reports have suggested that Jonathan might contest the 2027 presidential election against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, though he has not yet made any official declaration. Meanwhile, several leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged him to return to the party, while others believe he should avoid the race entirely.
Public opinion remains divided on Jonathan’s eligibility due to the 2018 constitutional amendment, which bars anyone who has been sworn in twice as president or governor from contesting again.

Amid these speculations, Jonathan has notably increased his public engagements, attending key national events and meeting influential political figures. Notably, he met with 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in Abuja on September 12, and later held discussions with ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark and other party leaders on September 25.
A source within the ADC leadership told Naija Blog Daily that the discussions centered on the 2027 presidential election and the party’s plans for Nigeria’s leadership future.
- “Dr. Jonathan is a respected statesman and a patriotic Nigerian. He would be a great asset to our party,” the source said. “Our National Chairman and other leaders have met with him several times, and the conversations revolved around the 2027 elections and how ADC could serve as a credible alternative platform for Nigerians.”
Another insider revealed that Jonathan may accept the ADC presidential ticket if it’s offered unopposed, particularly if Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi agree to a consensus arrangement.
- “He’s still consulting, but the discussions so far point toward a possible run under the ADC if key opposition leaders unite behind him,” the source added.
In his remarks, ADC Youth Leader Balarabe Rufai praised Jonathan’s leadership record, describing him as a “patriotic citizen who has written his name in gold.” He added that the ADC is now the most credible opposition party, free from internal crises affecting the PDP and Labour Party.
- “ADC is the only trusted platform left,” Rufai stated. “With leaders like Jonathan, the future of Nigeria can be redefined through trust and integrity.”
Also speaking, ADC National Treasurer Mani Ibrahim confirmed that the party’s coalition leaders are holding strategic meetings with stakeholders nationwide.
- “We have a clear roadmap leading to 2027. Nigerians are tired of poverty, insecurity, and hardship under the current administration. With the momentum we’ve gained, ADC is positioned to bring real change,” Ibrahim said.

However, reacting to the development, APC Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim dismissed Jonathan’s potential comeback, insisting that the ruling party would defeat him again regardless of his platform.
- “Our party defeated him when he was fully confident in the PDP. Defeating him under ADC will be even easier,” he said.
Efforts to reach ADC Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, Atiku’s Media Aide Paul Ibe, and Obidient Movement National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko were unsuccessful as of press time.
