Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reacted to the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the move as a form of “freedom” for the party rather than a setback.
Atiku, who was the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, officially left the party in a letter dated July 14, 2025, citing a departure from its founding principles as his reason for resigning. The former Vice President has since aligned with a coalition of opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde’s Reaction to Atiku’s Resignation
Speaking at the 10th Coronation Anniversary Colloquium of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, in Akure, Governor Makinde stated that Atiku’s exit would not weaken the PDP.
“Politics is a game of interest, and I don’t think Atiku’s exit will make any dent on the PDP. The PDP is an institution. You have the freedom to enter and exit. But I think anyone who would hold PDP down—it’s better for such a person to just leave,” Makinde said.
ADC Coalition Not a Threat
The Governor dismissed speculations about the rising profile of the ADC-led coalition, asserting that it poses no threat to the PDP.

- “I don’t see ADC as a threat to the PDP. The goal is the same if you’re dissatisfied with the pace and direction of governance. You’re free to associate with any platform,” he added.

Makinde concluded by stressing that while political figures come and go, institutions and the nation remain.
“Governors will come and go, presidents will come and go, but our country and our states will remain,” he stated.
