As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, elder statesman Adesunbo Onitiri has issued a stern warning to top political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, cautioning them against actions that could destabilize the country.
In a statement released in Lagos on Saturday, Onitiri, a respected voice in Nigerian political history, expressed deep concern over the rising political tensions and divisive rhetoric from some quarters.
“We Risked Our Lives for Democracy” — Onitiri
“As one of the original democrats who risked our lives during the 1993–1994 struggle against military rule, we cannot sit idly by while some politicians create openings for anti-democratic forces to exploit,” Onitiri declared.
He warned that escalating political hostilities could undermine Nigeria’s hard-earned democratic stability, especially at a time when the nation faces serious economic and security challenges.
Call for Political Restraint and National Unity
Onitiri called on both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties to set aside political differences and prioritize national interest over personal ambitions.
“The Federal Government is making efforts to address the inherited economic and security issues since taking office in 2023. What is needed now is cooperation, not division,” he emphasized.
He urged all political leaders to show patriotism and work across party lines for the betterment of Nigerians, stressing that the time for heated political battles was not now.

Atiku’s U.S. Court Move Criticized
In particular, Onitiri condemned reports that Atiku Abubakar is allegedly seeking a U.S. court’s intervention to challenge or disqualify President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
He described the move as “unnecessary and unacceptable to most Nigerians,” arguing that it only adds to national distraction and further polarizes the country.
Conclusion: Politicians Must Prioritize Peace Over Power
As political activities begin to ramp up ahead of 2027, voices like Onitiri’s serve as a timely reminder that stability, peace, and unity must take precedence over election-year tactics. For Nigeria to overcome its challenges, political actors must embrace dialogue over division.
