Internet Fraud Threatens Nigeria’s Economy, EFCC Chairman Tells Students at Ambrose Alli University
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has again cautioned Nigerian students against engaging in internet fraud, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo, stressing that there is “no shortcut to wealth.”
🎓 EFCC Speaks at Ambrose Alli University Anti-Corruption Symposium
Speaking during a one-day symposium titled “Safe Campus for Students: Combating Physical and Digital Threats,” held at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede urged youths to channel their digital skills toward positive and innovative ventures.
The event was organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council and featured contributions from academic and security stakeholders.
🛑 Yahoo Yahoo Is Not Sustainable — EFCC
Represented by ACE I Williams Oseghale, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, EFCC Benin Zonal Directorate, Olukoyede emphasized that internet fraud poses serious risks to Nigeria’s economic progress and global reputation.
- “There is no shortcut to wealth and fame. Acts of criminality might deliver wealth in the short term, but ultimately there will be misery and gnashing of teeth,” he warned.
He noted that Yahoo and cybercrime not only endanger the future of those involved but also discourage foreign direct investment (FDI) and hinder the nation’s development efforts.
🧠 Youths Urged to Be Change Agents, Not Fraudsters
Olukoyede encouraged students to become change agents, promoting values of integrity, creativity, and economic contribution. He stressed that corruption should be viewed as a common enemy and that young people must take up the responsibility to report and resist criminal practices.

“We are calling on youths to shun Yahoo Yahoo. It is not a sustainable way of life. A new insight into the disservice which corruption represents should inspire you to become whistleblowers and intelligence gatherers,” he said.
🏛 University, NANS Support Anti-Corruption Message
Prof. Sunday Samuel, Acting Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, commended the EFCC and other speakers, reaffirming the university’s commitment to creating a safe, corruption-free environment.
- “A safe campus environment is the foundation upon which academic excellence, personal growth, and future success are built,” he said.
Ojumoola Timileyin, NANS JCC Chairman, appreciated the EFCC’s impactful engagement, stating the message was “deeply felt by all participants.”
