OGBARU, ANAMBRA – June 14, 2025:
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has approved the sum of ₦15 million to support the mass burial of 43 indigenes of Ogwuaniocha, an oil-producing community in Ogbaru Local Government Area, who lost their lives during a deadly communal crisis in November 2021.
The cheque was presented by the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Anthony Ifeanya, on behalf of the governor, to the President-General of Ogwuaniocha Progressive Association, Hon. Vitalis Ekweanua, during a formal event attended by community stakeholders.
âš Background: A Devastating Crisis
The internal conflict, which erupted nearly four years ago, not only claimed dozens of lives but also destroyed schools, homes, healthcare facilities, and displaced hundreds of residents.
Many victims have remained unburied due to a lack of resources and prolonged instability.
“This ₦15 million is a sign of Governor Soludo’s compassion and commitment to justice and healing,” Ifeanya said.
🏚 Community Still in Ruins
Despite the state government’s support, Ogwuaniocha remains deserted, with survivors living in pain and poverty. Schools remain shut, healthcare services are unavailable, and farmlands are ruined by oil spillage from an unnamed drilling company.
“Our schools and healthcare centres were destroyed. Our children are out of school. 90% of our homes—including mine—were burnt beyond repair,” said Hon. Ekweanua.
He also called attention to ongoing environmental and economic damage from oil drilling activities, which have crippled farming and fishing in the area. No compensation has been received, he claimed.
🔍 Missing Traditional Ruler, Plea for Infrastructure
- The President-General further revealed that their traditional ruler is still missing—kidnapped since the crisis began in 2021.
- He appealed to the governor to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure and construct a bridge across the Ulasi River to link Ogwuaniocha to Ihiala LGA, which would help restore economic life to the community.
“We are seriously pleading for the governor’s intervention to bring back our community to life,” he added.
