In a powerful inaugural homily, Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever American pope, has called for an end to global exploitation, division, and hatred, urging the Catholic Church to become a unifying force for peace, justice, and compassion.
Addressing an estimated 200,000 faithful in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV—born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago—delivered his first papal mass in front of global dignitaries, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US Vice President JD Vance, and several world leaders.

“We still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, and an economic system that exploits the Earth’s resources while marginalizing the poorest,” Pope Leo XIV said.
This historic moment came ten days after his election as the 267th pope, succeeding Pope Francis, and highlighted Leo’s commitment to climate justice, social equality, and interfaith dialogue.

Pope Leo’s election has sparked enthusiasm in the U.S. Catholic community, while also raising geopolitical discussions about America’s growing global influence. As a former missionary in Peru, he also holds dual citizenship and maintains strong ties to Latin America.
“He will tear down walls and build bridges,” said Maria Grazia La Barbera, a pilgrim from Palermo, Italy.
Before his papacy, Leo was known for speaking out against anti-migrant policies and social injustices, often sharing strong views on political leadership in the United States.

- During the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV received the pallium and the fisherman’s ring, sacred symbols of papal authority. His deep humility was evident:
