The Nigerian Navy has successfully intercepted a wooden boat carrying 90,000 litres of stolen crude oil in the Araromi riverine community, located in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.
NaijaBlogDaily reports that the operation was carried out by personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Igbokoda, following actionable intelligence on illegal oil bunkering activities in the region.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, the Commanding Officer of FOB Igbokoda, Captain Aliyu Usman, revealed that the crude oil was illegally sourced from abandoned offshore oil well heads and was being transported to Lagos State when it was intercepted.
Upon sighting naval forces, the suspects abandoned the boat and fled into the creeks using a speedboat, effectively evading arrest.
Recovered Items Include:
- Three industrial pumping machines
- A long discharge hose
- Two high-powered outboard engines
- All items, including the boat, have been secured and processed by Defence Headquarters protocols.
Captain Usman emphasized that this operation reflects the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft, protect Nigeria’s oil infrastructure, and enforce maritime security across the nation’s waters.
