Real Madrid’s legendary midfielder, Luka Modric, has officially announced his departure from the Spanish giants following the conclusion of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.
The 39-year-old Croatian, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, confirmed the emotional decision via Instagram, saying:
“The moment has arrived. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end.”
Modric’s Last Game at the Bernabeu This Weekend
Modric will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, when Real Madrid host Real Sociedad in their last La Liga fixture of the 2024/25 season.
Having joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modric has had a trophy-laden 12-year career at the club, collecting:
- 6 UEFA Champions League titles
- 4 La Liga titles
- 28 trophies overall
- Which makes him the most decorated (has the most Trophies) in Real Madrid History.
“I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world… Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person,” Modric said.
Club World Cup to Be His Final Tournament
Real Madrid will begin their FIFA Club World Cup journey on June 18, facing Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, with Pachuca (Mexico) and RB Salzburg (Austria) also in the group.
