In a major step toward affordable housing, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to implement monthly and quarterly rent payment options, targeting relief for low- and middle-income residents struggling with high upfront rent costs.

The state’s Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, made the announcement during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing to mark Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in office.

“We believe monthly or quarterly payment options will reduce the stress of sourcing large sums for annual rent,” Akinderu-Fatai stated.

Relief for Tenants in Lagos

This initiative follows the success of the Rent-to-Own Scheme, where beneficiaries pay just 5% upfront and spread the balance over 10 years. Encouraged by positive feedback, the government is now pushing to restructure the rent payment system across the state.

Stakeholder Engagement Underway

The commissioner emphasized that consultations are ongoing with landlords, property developers, and legal experts to resolve issues such as:

• Landlord cooperation
• Payment enforcement
• Digital rent tracking systems

“This is not just policy on paper — we’re working on real, practical implementation,” he assured.

Pilot Phase Coming Soon

A pilot scheme is expected to launch in selected areas of Lagos, aimed at testing the feasibility before a state-wide rollout.
