The political landscape in Enugu State witnessed a major shake-up over the weekend as Hon. Sunday Umeha, member representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, officially dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection took place during a mini-rally held at Ibagwa-Aka in Igboeze South Local Government Area. Umeha was joined by over 1,000 Labour Party members, including key local government executives, in their mass exodus to the APC.
Key Highlights:
- Hon. Umeha, originally elected on the LP platform, confirmed he had resigned from the party and registered with the APC in his ward.
- He cited intractable internal divisions within the LP and the need to “connect to the centre” for better development opportunities as reasons for his switch.
- Business mogul and LP financier Chief Joshua Ogbonna a.k.a. “Father Father” led the defection in Igboeze South, describing the move as the beginning of grassroots mobilization for APC.
APC Leaders React
Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah, Enugu APC Chairman, declared that the party was on a mission to reclaim Enugu’s Lion Building (Government House) from PDP in 2027:
“This is an unprecedented defection. An entire LGA and ward executive collapsed into APC today.”
He added that PDP’s 26-year dominance in Enugu had led to “tears, heavy taxes, and demolition of livelihoods.”
Chief Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, was represented by Barr. George Ogara hailed the mass defection as a game-changer in the state’s political future.

“Igboeze South Will Not Come Last” – Ogbonna
Chief Ogbonna said, despite attempts to sabotage their defection — including the seizure of buses meant to transport supporters — they remained resolute:
“We’re more than 1,000. The work begins now — ward to ward. Igboeze South will not come last.”
He emphasized that their grassroots movement would build momentum heading into 2027.
