NaijaBlogDaily reports that Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Biafra agitator and factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been formally charged with terrorism-related offences by Finnish authorities.
According to reports from Finnish media outlet Yle, the Deputy Prosecutor General of Finland filed charges against Ekpa on Friday morning, accusing him of:
- Public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent
- Participation in a terrorist group
- Court Trial Set in Lahti
The case is scheduled to be heard at the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti, where Ekpa resides. Prosecutors allege that Ekpa used his platform in Finland to incite violence and spread separatist propaganda aimed at destabilizing Nigeria’s South-East region, commonly referred to as Biafra land.
Ongoing Investigations and Arrest
Ekpa, 40, was arrested on November 21, 2024, alongside four other suspects, during a joint investigation involving Finnish police and Nigerian authorities. The other four have since been released.
According to the Finnish police, Ekpa has been linked to violence and attacks against civilians in South-East Nigeria, fueled by his continued calls for sit-at-home orders and separatist unrest through online broadcasts.
IPOB and Biafra Agitation
Ekpa leads a faction of IPOB, a group pushing for the creation of an independent state of Biafra from the South-East and parts of the South-South region of Nigeria. IPOB has been declared a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government.
