The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 in London.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The holiday forms part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by the Presidency in recognition of Buhari’s service to the nation.
🕊 A Day of Reflection and National Tribute
In a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a leader who “served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to unity and progress.”
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on the life, leadership, and values upheld by President Buhari,” the statement read.
The Federal Government encouraged citizens to use the day to promote:
- Peace
- Patriotism
- National cohesion
…in line with the late President’s vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
🏳 National Mourning Continues
As part of the national mourning protocol:
Nigerian flags will continue to fly at half-mast nationwide from Sunday, July 13, through Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Prayers, tributes, and official processions will be held across federal and state institutions.

President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military Head of State (1983–1985) and democratically elected President (2015–2023), was celebrated for his:

His death was confirmed by Garba Shehu, his former special adviser, in a statement issued on Sunday evening.
