A jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Center in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, has resulted in the escape of 12 inmates, the state government confirmed on Monday.
In a statement, Kogi’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate” while commending the swift response of security agencies in managing the situation.
Kogi Government Vows Thorough Investigation
Fanwo raised concerns about the nature of the escape, stating:
- “The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns. This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system.”
- The Kogi State Government has pledged to work closely with security agencies to uncover the truth behind the jailbreak and prevent future occurrences.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has ordered the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Center and other security agencies to enhance prison security and prevent further breaches.
Additionally, the government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies with logistics and resources to strengthen their operations.

While investigations continue, Fanwo assured residents that the situation is under control and urged them to remain calm.
