The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that Benue, Ekiti, and Kebbi States recorded the highest year-on-year food inflation rates in Nigeria, according to its April 2025 Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.
Benue State led the chart with a staggering 51.76% rise in food inflation, followed by Ekiti State at 34.05%, and Kebbi State at 33.82%. These figures indicate that food prices surged the most in these three states over the past year.
On the flip side, Ebonyi (7.19%), Adamawa (9.52%), and Ogun (9.91%) recorded the lowest year-on-year food inflation rates.
Month-on-Month Trends
In April alone, food prices also spiked significantly in Benue (25.59%), Ekiti (16.73%), and Yobe (13.92%) on a month-to-month basis. Meanwhile, some states like Ebonyi (-14.43%), Kano (-11.37%), and Ogun (-7.06%) saw a notable decline in food inflation during the same period.
Possible Causes
Experts suggest that the sharp rise in Benue’s food inflation may be linked to recent violent attacks and insecurity in the North Central state, which have disrupted farming activities and displaced many residents.
National Outlook
Nationally, Nigeria’s headline food inflation stood at 21.26% in April, a slight decrease from 2.18% in March to 2.06% on a month-to-month basis. The NBS attributes the decline to reduced prices of essential food items such as maize flour, wheat grain, dried okra, yam flour, soybeans, rice, Bambara beans, and brown beans.
