Bayelsa Governor Diri Suspends Swali Monarch Over Cultism Surge, Orders Arrest of His Sons.

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has suspended His Royal Highness Wilcox Seiyefa Job, the Paramount Ruler of Swali Community, over his failure to tackle rising cultism and criminal activities in his domain, Yenagoa Local Government Area.

The suspension, announced in a joint statement by Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, and the Commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Thompson Amule, takes immediate effect.

According to the government, the monarch failed to provide the leadership expected to curb cult violence and insecurity in the area. The situation worsened after credible intelligence linked two of his sons to cult groups allegedly involved in violent clashes.

Governor Diri has directed the Bayelsa State Police Command to declare the two royal sons and other cult members wanted for arrest and prosecution.

“This decisive action is aimed at restoring peace and public safety in Swali and other affected communities,” the statement read.

In a broader move against cultism, the governor also instructed the management of Niger Delta University (NDU) to expel students engaged in cult-related activities. This follows recent deadly clashes in Amassoma, the university’s host community.

Adding to the concern, the Forum of Repentant Cultists for Peace in Bayelsa (FRCPB) has warned of escalating violence and urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to prioritize peace and infrastructure over actions that could destabilize the region.

Swali Community has recently become a hotspot for cult-related killings, as rival groups—the Greenlanders and the Bobos—continue to battle over control of a government-owned transport terminal. At least 15 lives have been lost since January 2025 due to these violent clashes.
