Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has spoken out following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that no family suffered more under Buhari’s regime than his own.
In a video shared via his Instagram page, the son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti accused the late former president of causing irreparable harm to the Kuti family during his time as Nigeria’s military Head of State.
- “There’s nobody Buhari has offended and damaged like my family. Buhari dealt with my family, but his death is not any type of justice or victory for my family,” Seun said.
He lamented that his father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and his uncles Koye and Beko Ransome-Kuti—whom he claimed were unjustly persecuted by Buhari—all died long before the former leader.

- “My only regret is that my dad Fela, and my uncles Koye and Beko died before him; all better men than him,” he added.
- “The only solace I can take from his death is that the three of them will gang up against him in the afterlife, if there’s such a thing.”
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria first as a military leader in the 1980s and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday in a London clinic. His body was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The Kuti family has long been vocal critics of authoritarian rule in Nigeria. Fela Kuti was famously beaten and imprisoned under Buhari’s military government, a period many remember for its crackdown on dissent.
