Peter Obi Clarifies Vatican Visit: “Not Political, But a Call for Moral Reform”.

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has returned from a solemn visit to the Vatican, emphasizing that his participation in the recent inauguration ceremony was spiritual, not political.

In a statement shared on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), Obi explained that the Vatican trip was deeply reflective and should not be viewed through a political lens.

“I have just returned from the Vatican, and it was a deeply solemn and reflective visit. My participation in the inauguration ceremony was in line with my previous attendance at global official events — this was no exception,” he said.

Obi stressed that the event was of moral and spiritual importance, not a political engagement. He added that such moments should be reserved for introspection, not politicization.

The former Anambra State governor also noted that he did not meet Pope Francis, as the Papal Audience was exclusive to heads of state and accredited diplomats.

“What should truly command our attention is the content and moral force in the Pope’s homily,” Obi said, referring to the Pope’s strong call to fight poverty, end corruption, and promote unity beyond ethnic, religious, and political divisions.

Obi highlighted the Pope’s message as a blueprint for national development, urging Nigerian leaders to focus on tackling corruption and prioritizing key sectors like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation.

“The fight against corruption is the essential first step toward building a just society where public funds are used for what truly matters,” he stated.

Obi concluded by calling on Nigerian politicians and leaders to reflect deeply on their responsibilities and work toward a more just, compassionate, and prosperous Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Vatican ceremony also drew attention on social media after a brief encounter between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV. The event was attended by dignitaries from around the world, and photos of the meeting shared by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga sparked reactions online.
