President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with the newly installed Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, following the Pontiff’s inaugural mass in St Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
The meeting marked a symbolic moment between Nigeria and the Vatican, as Tinubu joined other global leaders to witness the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy.
A Brief but Significant Encounter
Following the solemn mass, the first-ever American Pope, Leo XIV, greeted numerous world leaders with handshakes and brief exchanges. President Tinubu had a short but respectful conversation with the Pontiff as they clasped hands — a gesture seen as a diplomatic acknowledgement of Nigeria’s place in the global religious community.
Other dignitaries who met the Pope included U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, among several others.
A Call for Unity and Justice
During his homily, Pope Leo XIV made a passionate appeal for peace, environmental care, and the protection of the poor.
“We still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice… and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalises the poorest,” the 69-year-old pontiff declared.
He urged the Church to be a transformational force in a world full of division, setting a firm tone for his leadership.
